AMTRAK: Fire shut down NE Rail Corridor

By: James McGinnis phillyBurbs.com
A fire aboard a train headed northbound through Bucks County has
caused serious damage to power lines, forcing all trains that use
those tracks to shutdown, according to AMTRAK.

"This is bad," said Amtrak spokeswoman Karina Romero.

AMTRAK officials said they still aren't sure what happened aboard the
NJ Transit Train. All SEPTA, Amtrak, and NJTransit lines that pass
along the R7 cooridor have been shutdown.

Romero said she has no idea when the lines might be repaired.

It's a real shame that a simple engine fire can shut down passenger service
along the NEC. It makes me realize just how fragile train infrastructure
really is in this region even if snow shutting things down didn't.

I don't have a solution except more infrastructure and even with more a wide
scale power failure would shut things down just as readily.

Don't look for much infrastructure help in the NEC. Most of the $8
billion
Obama "gave" to Amtrak is for other areas of the country.

That's the real problem, the NEC has been waiting for real improvement
for decades, just as much of the rest of the country has. Only
problem is that the NEC is heavily used by Amtrak and commuter rail
operators and also offers the biggest possible return on investment.

I also note that it's not Amtrak that's getting the high speed
investment elsewhere. I don't expect miracles, but I did expect that
maybe things like bridges that need replacement along the NEC could
have gotten replaced.
