According to TRIP, (The Road Information Program) poor urban roads lead
to an extra average $400 in costs to drivers per year. Philly is not the
worst but could use a great deal of improvement.

A "great deal of improvement". What an understatement!

Any number of Center City streets are in awful condition. Hell on cars
and, my God, I don't know how bike riders manage on them!

Seriously I've seen incredibly worse roads including one near Cleveland
that actually had a hidden pothole so wide and deep that I ruined just
about everything that could be ruined on the front end of a car without
visibly damaging the body. Axle, both tires, MacPherson struts, and
lots of stuff I don't want to remember. I also remember streets in
Chicago that were worse than anything I've ever seen here. The one
good thing about Chicago though was that CTA was reliable enough to get
places without having to drive.

At any rate let's hope we have a mild winter so that pothole season
doesn't almost require giving up driving.

Potholes do get filled pretty regularly here. The most severe problem
we have
is UNEVEN pavement some of which is as a result of those filled
potholes.

Here we have dips/valleys/hills. There's a section of N. 19th St, near
Mt Vernon/Wallace Sts.,
that has a stretch of "hilled" asphalt that is about 4-5" high above
the normal street
level. The hot summer made this hill worse. Heat softened the asphalt
and the weight of vehicles passing
(the 33 bus goes south on 19th) increased the hill.
